Whisky Tasting Notes - December 2022

Or, how I learned to actually take notes when doing this

Recently, I've signed up to a Whisky tasting subscription service - Pour and Sip. Each month they send me 5 Drams for me to taste, alongside tasting notes, and some history on each of the distilleries, or if it's a special Dram, the reason behind it.

Much as with my other tasting notes, for each Whisky I've taken the liberty of compiling an identifiable name, it's ABV, and it's price (at time of listing) on the Master of Malt website (the company from which I purchased the calendar).

Where applicable, I've also tried to list the country of origin (though I have omitted Scotland, and I've probably missed some). Flavours listed with a question mark are those I'm not sure if I was reading correctly, or were possibly confused with another flavour.

Note: This box, whilst it did arrive during December 2022, was not opened for tasting until January 2023.

#1

Note: This box, whilst it did arrive during December 2022, was not opened for tasting until January 2023. Glen Moray 15 Single - 40% ABV - £51

Note: I've been to this one, but bought others instead

Colour: Reddish Gold, this has definitely spent a long time in a Sherry cask

Nose: Spicy, Dark Fruit, Chocolate?, Oaky, Honey notes

Palette: Peppery, Slightly Smokey, Lots of Tannin (weird for a low ABV)

Finish: Banana?, Raisin / Dark Fruit

Overall: Nice, but I know now why I didn't buy it, the finish is slightly strange and lingers a slight bit too long

Verdict: I'll stick to their other finishes

#2

Tamnavulin Red Wine Cask Edition - 40% ABV - £34

Note: Have not been here, but I really want to go because they produce some absolute crackers!

Colour: Very Dark, almost brown in hue, a definite result of bathing in red wine

Nose: Absolutely Divine, Strong Toffee Apple, with Ginger Spice, and a hint of Stewed Blackberries

Palette: Sloes, lots of sloes... Yum, Cinnamon Spice, with Citrus Peel, and Dark Chocolate

Finish: Wine, a beautiful finish, with a nutty edge, and possibly Raspberry?

Overall: Possibly the best I've had in the last month, on the nose this is absolutely divine!

Verdict: 11/10, Will be buying

#3

Mannochmore 14 Year Old, Madeira Hogshead Finish - 53.5% ABV - £75

Colour: Rose Gold,

Nose: Honey, Apricot and Raisin, with some Mild Citrus

Palette: Spicy, Nutty (possibly Walnut), with Honey and Lemon

Finish: Loud, Nutty (Hazelnut now), with a fruity finish

Overall: ABV feels higher than it is .. need's water

Verdict: It uhh, needed that water, opened it right up. Won't be buying this though, there are far nicer Single / Hogsheads Cask's out there

#4

Deanston 20 Year Old 2007 Calvados Cask - 57.5% ABV - £90

Note: This is way Whisky is meant to be done, no filter, no chilling, no watering down, just cask to glass

Colour: Like Golden Amber Nectar, in a glass

Nose: Baked Apples, Honey, More Apple, and some Hobnob

Palette: Stewed Apples, Cinnamon Spice, with a Jammy Citrus

Finish: Apples again, Hobnobs and some spice

Overall: This is the way Whisky is meant to be, extremely nice

Verdict: May end up buying this one

#5

Butterscotch & Vanilla & Toast & A Generation 30 Year Old - 40% ABV - £65

Colour: Reddish Gold

Nose: Almost Smells Perfumed, Vanilla (obviously), Burnt Toast (obviously), Not getting Butterscotch though

Palette: Citrus (or the Oily kind), Perfume again, Oaky, and then a weird taste I can't nail down

Finish: Soft, very soft, with Marmalade, and Vanilla

Overall: It's certainly grain based

Verdict: Grain based => No from me
